Show & Tell Friday~

Here is a photo of my antique doll I received for my 16th birthday. (I'm 42 now) My parents were on vacation visiting family in Edinburgh, Scotland on my birthday...so I told them "I want an old doll for my birthday" and this is what they brought me back.
She is a little sweetie. (You know, I've never named her... any suggestions?) She is wearing a handmade dress that is to big for her... I often wonder if that dress was a hand-me-down from another doll. Her hair is human hair, it still has its natural curl to it. (I've never brushed it, so it looks very messy.) I've read they often used the hair of the child that was receiving this kinda doll. I would like to think that as well, I think thats neat. Her body is fully jointed and in excellent condition. I recently found some old reproduction patterns for some clothing that would be appropriate for her. I was thinking one of these days I'd whip her up some new duds. Maybe even a whole wardrobe full of clothing and shoes etc.... hmmm another project! lol

  1. Cheryl, That doll is beautiful. How tall is she? I first started collecting dolls when I found an antique doll that had been totally abused and was being put out in someone's garbage. He hair was almost noexistant, so I bought her a new wig. She was wearing a blouse only, so I made her a dress, gave her stockings and shoes, and put riboons in her hair. Her body is made of some sort of papier mache coated with a glaze-like substance. Her head is poreclain and her mouth is open showing some tiny little teeth. She is fully jointed. I tried looking her up in a book. I think she's German - or so I've been told. I've had her for about 20 years now, and she sits proudly on an antique loveseat in my livingroom along with the 10 or so dolls I've collected since. I just love them.

  3. Your doll is so pretty! She looks German made to me. I have a few dolls that look very similar and they are German. She should definitely have an old fashioned name. How about Emily?

  6. How fun it would be to give her a common Scottish girls name to keep her connection to Edinburgh. Maybe you'll have to show her in a future show and tell with some new duds you create! Enjoy!

  12. How sweet! I think it would be neat to have different clothes for her, especially for different seasons.

The names that are coming to mind so far (Erin and Molly) are more Irish than Scottish, though. I like Morning Glory's suggestion!

  13. Sweetie seems to be a fine name for a doll. :)

  15. Very lovely. Wish I'd hung onto some dolls I had way back when (I'm 56)... I agree an old-fashioned name would be best. How about Sara??--I'm only kidding! Actually, she looks like an Emily to me.

  16. She is beautiful! She has a very sweet feminine face. Her name should match that--something like Marie, Emily, Grace, Emma--something.
